According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.1 km (2.0 mi). 3.3 km (1.3 mi) of it is land and 1.8 km (0.7 mi) of it is water. The total area is 35.35% water. With a population density of 11,675.4/km (30,239.2/sq mi), it is the second- (to neighboring Union City) most densely populated city in the United States. It's the fourth most densely populated municipality in America, after its neighboring communities of Guttenberg, Union City and West New York[citation needed].
